understanding Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tdcs)

what is tdcs

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (also known as tDCS) is an increasingly popular form of neurostimulation that applies a low level electric current through two electrodes to targeted areas of the brain as an alternative to chemical stimulants such as caffeine, sugar, and other performance enhancers. tDCS is supported by over 4,000 published studies (including reviews and clinical trials) and is one of the most popular devices used in the neuroscience field today. Through Neurath, tDCS is now helping  athletes all over the world elevete their performance.

HOW SAFE IS TDCS

For healthy individuals, tDCS is a safe, effective method to mildly stimulate the brain and is widely used for all types of mental optimization techniques ranging from depression to performance ehancement. TDCS is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique considered to be safe, tolerable, and acceptable to use in adults.  The  technology is helping people (and now athletes through Neurath) all over the world realize their very best mental and physical potential. The amount of electricity used for tDCS is less than 5% of the amount that permanently changes brain tissue, thereby ensuring safety.

tdcs in sports

The central nervous system plays a crucial role in integrating body signals during exercise, and in generating a relevant response which modulates the pacing and exercise performance. In this regard, the neuromodulatory effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may modulate certain behaviors related to exercise, psychophysiological responses to exercise, and exercise performance. Several studies have assessed the effect of tDCS on different brain regions and found promising results on heart rate, perceived exertion, and performance in different types of exercise such as strength (isometric, isokinetic, and isotonic), endurance (cycling, running), sprint, flexibility, and balance.

how neurath uses tdcs

While most other tDCS  focus soly on the physiological contributions of tDCS in sports (motor cortex), the Neurath program is primarily based on a psychophysiological approach. We believe that psychological strength and visual intelligence are the catalysts to top physical performance. Therefore, we have designed our tDCS to targets and optimize the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC) area of the brain. The part of the brain that is connectected to the motor cortex and is responsible for decision-making and visual search. Neurath applies neurostimulation to the DLPFC to activate alertness, attention and to improve visual search . Our approach has shown that neuro stimulation of the DLPFC area has a significant effect on the accuracy and visual attention (quiet eye) in players and causes a significant increase in accuracy and length of the quiet eye duration (QED).  Our tDCS plays a role in the firing of the neurons in the prefrontal lobe region through a weak (safe) emission of electrical current to stimulate the DLPFC part of the brain. This stimulation can result in QE and mushin (based on QET) and ultimately elevated performance.
